Chapter 7 -

Emotional Intelligence at

Your Work Place

You learned how to use your EQ in your social life. Now in this chapter, you will learn how to use it in your office or work place. We have already hinted in a couple of the chapters that led to this one of ways that you can use emotional intelligence to spur people on to working more efficiently, but we will explain this in more detail within the pages of this chapter.

Make Sure You Understand Yourself

First of all, make sure that you understand your own emotions. Try observing how your emotions and your behavior are connected. When you feel a strong emotion, notice how you react. To put it simply, when you are faced with a situation, instead of reacting, take a step back and examine what you are feeling in that moment. Look at the instinctive response that is on the tip of your tongue – what emotion is it? Why are you feeling it? What triggered this response? The more and more you understand what triggers your specific behavioral impulses, the better your EQ becomes. And once you know what your behavioral pattern is, you can navigate and manage it better in the future. Take diary notes if you think that this will help. There are several emotional responses that may make you work harder, but you also need to be aware of those that will hinder your work because these emotions may be ones that are holding you back in your career.

Here are a few instances of different types of behaviors and the meaning behind them:

· While feeling embarrassed or insecure, you might withdraw from conversation with others and disconnect. This can be very embarrassing in a work situation because you need better people skills especially when you meet new people and are faced with different scenarios in your everyday work.

· When you are angry, you may end up raising your voice and speaking at a loud volume or even yelling; you could also march away in anger or have the urge to physically harm someone. You do need to manage your anger and if you have emotional intelligence will know that anger fuels negativity. Some people use anger to distance themselves from a situation that made them feel uncomfortable and actually achieve more physical work. If this is the case with you, it’s better to do something physical that helps you to calm down, rather than spoil a relationship with a colleague that you count on in your everyday work life.

· When you feel overwhelmed or panicky, it is possible that you will not be able to focus on what you are doing. You will probably lose track of whatever you were doing and start crying, or even have a panic attack. In a situation such as this, learn to use what we have told you about breathing to get back to your normal state where you are no longer panicking. If you take action while you are feeling emotions such as this, you are likely to make mistakes that you may regret.
